Centrist Liberalism Triumphant, 1789–1914Después de mantener cautivo al público lector con la aparición en 1989 de La segunda era de gran expansión de la economía-mundo capitalista, 1730-1850, finalmente Immanuel Wallerstein sacó a la luz el cuarto volumen de la serie El moderno sistema mundial, uno de los proyectos más ambiciosos y originales en Ciencias Sociales sobre el estudio del cambio social.

Publicado bajo el título The Modern World-System IV: Centrist Liberalism Triumphant, 1789-1914 este volumen (leer capítulo 1) analiza las transformaciones ocurridas durante el siglo XIX enmarcado por dos eventos de suma relevancia: la Revolución Francesa y el estallido de la Primera Guerra Mundial.

Es en este periodo que Wallerstein nos habla acerca de la emergencia de tres grandes ideologías —conservadurismo, liberalismo y radicalismo— y señala cómo la fracción capitalista en Gran Bretaña implanta un relativo orden mundial teniendo al liberalismo triunfante como ideología hegemónica.

La aparición de un quinto volumen no ha sido descartada, y de concretarse posiblemente abarcaría de 1873 a 1968/89, afirma el autor. Incluso en un escenario no muy lejano podría hablarse de la preparación de un sexto volumen, el cual analizaría la crisis estructural del capitalismo economía-mundo tomando como punto de partida el periodo de 1945/68-2050. "Y después, estaremos en una situación totalmente nueva. El moderno sistema-mundo habrá visto su definitiva desaparición, cediendo lugar a un sucesor o sucesores aún desconocido y cuyas características aún no podemos esbozar" (Wallerstein).
