My aim in this sixth edition, as in the previous five, has been to capture the excitement that defines the best of sociology and to inspire a new generation of sociologists. The book was written with the firm belief that sociology plays a key role in modern intellectual culture and holds a central place in the social sciences. It avoids overly sophisticated concepts and does not make a virtue of sociological jargon.

However, it incorporates findings from the cutting edge of the discipline, along with contemporary issues and data. My own work is included, and I have referred to it in the first person to clarify when I am discussing my contributions to the field. I have also included the views of my critics where necessary. I hope this is not a partisan treatment; as usual, I aimed to cover the major perspectives in sociology and the main findings of contemporary research in an even-handed, though not indiscriminate, manner.
